How to Tint Tail Lights Using a Spray Tint
Step 1: Start by cleaning your tail lights with a glass cleaner or dishwasher liquid. This will help you to get rid of the stains and dirt. You can use a towel but a microfiber cloth will give you the best result. Don’t forget to clean the inner corners of the lights too!
step 2: After cleaning the lights properly, sand them with a wet piece of 800 grit sandpaper to provide a completely smooth surface for the spray tint. Wipe and let both the lights dry. Repeat this process again with two pieces of sandpapers each of 1000 grit and 2000 grit respectively.
Step 3: Now get a masking tape and cover the outside areas of the tail lights where you don’t want to tint. Try not to spray paint your reverse lights in order to avoid legal consequences.
Step 4: For precautionary steps, try to cover the whole backside of your car with a clear paper. By doing so, you will be able to spray comfortably without sprinkling color droplets to the other parts of your car except for the tail lights.
Step 5: Now before you start spraying, shake the spray can well. I’ll suggest you to hold it about six to seven inches away from the light for best coverage. Start spray from left to right side and then from right to left. You can also do it vice versa. After applying this first layer, leave the tint to dry for 15 to 30 minutes.
Step 6: Re-apply the spray for one or two more times to get your expected color contrast and better result. Leave overnight to dry and get the perfect new look of your tail lights by the next day.
Step 7: Apply one or two coats of clear coats over the previous coating. It will make the tint glossier and more durable to scratches.
How to Tint Tail Lights Using a Film Tint
Step 1: Start by cleaning your tail lights with a glass cleaner or dishwasher liquid. This will help you to get rid of the debris, watermark, and dirt. You can use a towel but a microfiber cloth will give you the best results. Don’t forget to clean the inner corners of the lights too!
Step 2: After selecting the film of your choice, cut it out approximately as per the width and length of your headlight. Don’t cut it shorter than your light size.
Step 3: Remove the protective plastic sheet from the film. In order to keep the adhesive from drying out before properly setting up and sticking to the surface, apply a solution of 85% water and 15% rubbing alcohol on the adhesive side.
Step 4: Place the film over the tail light and use a squeegee to press it properly to its place. Try not to leave any water droplet or air bubble inside.
Step 5: Use a heat gun to soften the film material and press it with the squeegee to fit the surface of the tail light appropriately including the curved areas.
Step 6: After covering all the area of the tail light, use a sharp cutter to cut out the excess film. Heat the whole film covered area with a heat gun for the last time in order to give a smooth finishing.
